BIO
The author, R.J. Walker was born in Portsmouth, Virginia where he spent the first few years of his life. His parents moved the family to Newark, NJ where R.J. spent most of his childhood and still calls his true home. “Newark was only fifteen minutes from New York City so life was always fast pace and truly amazing to me,” said Walker. At around five years of age he started writing poetry and winning various contest in the local newspaper. One of his favorite writing activities was writing a poem for his Aunt Linda’s birthday every year. He did this yearly ritual all the way into adulthood.
At the age of 13 his family moved to Fairmont, NC which was the town that his mother and her parents grew up in. While he attended Fairmont High School he participated in various activities and clubs. His greatest joy came when playing in the marching and concert bands. He was humbled and honored when one of his poems about a classmate that was killed in an automobile accident was printed in the school’s yearbook. “Whenever things bothered me or I wanted to express my feelings, writing was always my dependable outlet,” he said.
After graduating from high school he enrolled at Elizabeth City State University, where he considers to have spent some of the best years of his life. While in college he participated in the marching and concert bands, student government association, University Players and the Circle K Club. He also was the editor of the school’s newspaper and photographer for the yearbook. He graduated for E.C.S.U. with a BA in English and a minor in News Media.
After graduating he ventured to Baltimore, Maryland where he worked in various capacities. Public relations, legal assistant, radio announcer, photographer and loan counselor to name a few. He also was fortunate enough to work on several high profile political campaigns. While in Baltimore he was also honored to attend two years of law school at the University of Maryland school of law.
After spending 12 years in Maryland he relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. “My years in Florida were my all the way live years,” said Walker. While living in Florida he was publisher and editor of his own fitness magazine, hosted a radio and television show, operated a modeling agency and had a clothing line. If that’s not enough he also served as a certified fitness instructor and was the Assistant Public Relations Director at Edward Waters College. He was also priviledged to collaborate with Venus Swimwear and Hawaiian Tropics which afforded him the opportunity to work with and photograph models from around the world. He lived in Florida for eight years and then did a short stint in Columbia and Sumter, S.C. where he taught high school English.
After leaving S.C. he relocated back to Fairmont, N.C. to be closer to his family and to answer a higher calling. Once back he was licensed and ordained as a minister. “I’m always working to get to the place where God wants me to be,” he said. “I’ve let God down numerous times, but I refuse to be defeated and not become the man that He has ordained me to be.”
Professionally he then became the editor and photographer for one of the county’s newspaper called The Robeson Journal. While serving in those positions for seven years he became very popular throughout the county for his passion for covering high school games, pageants and numerous events throughout the county. He also has his own news radio show on a local radio station called “The R.J. Report.” He is currently the publisher and editor of his own online magazine called Robeson Illustrated. Part of my daily prayer is for God to continuously provide me with words of gold in my speaking and my writing, and that those words may truly be a blessing to all that read them.’
John 1:1 In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.
